It is therefore

essential that its Vice-Chancellor should be a man distinguished,

not only by his scholarship and administrative ability and

experience, but also by great tact and understanding of

Oriental races.

It is considered desirable that the selected candidate

should be between the age of 40 and 45. The appointment will

continue until the Vice-Chancellor shall reach the age of 55.

The salary attached to the Vice-Chancellorship is

£2,200 p.a., payable at the current rate of exchange. In

addition, the Vice-Chancellor will be provided with a house

known as "the Vice-Chancellor's Lodge" and shall be permitted to

have the free use of such fixtures, fittings and heavy furniture

as may be provided by the University. A plan of the Vice-

Chancellor's Lodge and a statement showing the extent and nature

of the fittings and furniture supplied will be sent to you by

the following mail.

8. In other respects the engagement of the Vice-Chancellor

shall be governed by and in accordance with the terms of the

General Conditions of Service laid down by the Council of the

University. A copy of these General Regulations is attached.

9. As regards the precise procedure to be followed in the

quest for possible candidates: I am to say that the matter is

left to your discretion, and that any expense that may have

to be incurred by you in this connection will be defrayed by

this office on receipt of a statement from you.

10. I am at the same time to inform you that His Excellency

the Governor of Hong Kong, who is also Chancellor of the

University, proposes to write to the Secretary of State for the

Colonies suggesting that a representative of the Colonial Office

might be associated with the Bureau in the task of finding the

best possible candidate for the Vice-Chancellorship.
